Little flames and candle lights have always attracted me. That’s why I decided to try out candle making. Appropriately chosen shape, scent and colour can brighten up, enliven and perfume every interior and that’s what I enjoy so much. It’s alchemy, even though it looks very easy.

Basic information and frequently asked questions

You see beautiful candles in shops, but none of them is exactly what you want? So why not make your own? It's easy! In our shop, you'll find everything you need for it. In addition to various waxes and wicks, here you can also buy silicone moulds, candle containers or special dishes and utensils. You can even make your own candleholders, for example from Jesmonite clay! Alternatively, you can try starter kits (which are also suitable as a gift) for all those who would like to test candle making first. You will find answers to various questions about candle making below.

I want to make a candle, where do I start?

First, you need to decide whether you want to make a free-standing candle or a candle in a container. They use a different wax and the wick attachment is a bit different too.

What are the differences between waxes?

They differ in melting temperature, whether they are suitable for containers or moulds, as well as in colour. Simply put, paraffin has a white colour and is only suitable for moulds, while other natural waxes have different colours (from cream to light yellow) and are suitable for use in moulds as well as containers. Some waxes also get a specific "pattern" after hardening, which is manifested in freestanding candles. We're preparing an article on this topic for you.

What is the difference between wicks?

In our range you'll find two basic types of wicks - braided and wooden. You can use the braided ones for candles poured into moulds as well as into containers, and wooden ones can only be used in candles in containers. It also depends on the type of wax chosen. If you use a wick other than the one suitable for the given wax, the candle may burn too little or too much. When selecting the wick, also take into account the diameter of the selected mould/container. The recommended diameter is given in the detailed description of the wicks after clicking on the product. Wooden wicks don't burn the same as textile wicks, it can be said that they tend to smolder, so don't be afraid if you don't attain such a flame with a candle with a wooden wick as those with a braided wick have.

How long is the wick supposed to be?

That depends on what material the wick is made of. For wooden wicks, the length should be approx. 4 - 6 mm, and for textile wicks approx. 1 cm above the wax level. Note that wicks should be shortened only after the wax has hardened. We also have handy scissors in our menu that are designed for just that!

How to dissolve wax?

Always dissolve wax in a water bath. When dissolving directly in a pot on a cooker, uneven dissolution may occur, the wax may experience a thermal shock that may affect the resulting product and, last but not least, the wax may burn and damage the dishes used. We recommend using special dishes that will be reserved only for creating with wax.

Can I dye the wax and add, for example, dried flowers?

Yes, that's possible! In our range you'll find special dyes for candle wax, which can be used to dye candles (according to the instructions on the dye packaging). In addition, various petals are often added to candles, which can also be found in our range. Since these are natural products, they may burn in the short term, but you don't have to worry about it, that's normal.

What can I do to make the candle smell good?

Adding aromas can create a unique fragrant candle. If you add natural aromas, then the candle will only smell when it burns. If synthetic aromas are used, the candle itself will smell.

How is the making of candles in containers and silicone moulds different?

When making a candle in a container, it's first necessary to stick a wick in a metal stand on the bottom of the container, and then straighten the wick and stretch it (ideally by attaching it to a special holder). Then melted wax can be poured into the container. CAUTION! The container must be pre-heated in order for the wax to adhere to the surface, on the contrary, in the case of pouring into moulds, avoid pre-heating. In the case of making freestanding candles, for example in silicone moulds, it should be remembered that the mould is upside down, that means that you'll pour the wax from the side on which the final product will stand. The silicone mould must first be pierced, using a needle, the wick must be drawn through it up to the edge of the mould and, just as in the case of pouring into containers, the wick must be stretched using a special holder.

What are paraffin candle additives for and do I have to use them?

It isn't absolutely necessary, but for those who want to achieve impeccable results in making candles from paraffin, their use is recommended. Their addition to the wax minimizes the undesirable effects visible in the resulting product, such as crystallisation or scaling, or it can affect the colour of the candle. It's then possible to penetrate the wick with Alpha Olefin to make it straight and solid.

Can I make my own candleholder or a candle container?

Of course, but make sure it's made of non-flammable materials. Try to create a candleholder or even a container into which you can pour wax from the popular Jesmonite clay - we only recommend not to paint the resulting product with anything and leave the clay in its raw form. Crystal resin products are in no way suitable for creating candleholders or coasters for candles, it's a chemical that could ignite easily!

How much time do I have to set aside to make a candle?

This, of course, depends on what candle you want to create. The actual pouring of the candle only takes a moment, but the preparation must not be underestimated and it's also necessary to leave enough time for the wax to properly solidify. This should be at least 24-48 hours.

Don't forget about safety!

Never leave a lit candle unattended by an adult! Likewise, adult supervision is required when candles are being made by children. And, of course, adults should also take extra care. It's working with hot wax, which can cause burns in the event of spillage.
