Tanzanite is associated with transformation and spiritual growth. In many cultures it is believed that tanzanite can help its wearer find their life's purpose and develop their inner abilities. It has a distinctive blue colour, ranging from light blue to dark blue. It is traditionally linked to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, passion and wealth. According to astrology, it reportedly supports clear thinking and communication and helps express thoughts and feelings with ease and confidence.

People also seek it out for its reported harmonising effects. It is said to help establish balance in emotion and thought. In alternative medicine it is used mainly for its calming effect on mind and body. It is said to help reduce stress and anxiety. Tanzanite reportedly supports creativity and inspiration. Its wearers are said to be able to express themselves easily in an artistic way. Tanzanite is also said to support intuition and access to inner wisdom. It reportedly strengthens perception of the inner voice and the ability to find answers to important questions. Localities, forms of tanzanite and history:

The only place in the world where tanzanite can be found is the Mererani area, near the city of Arusha in northern Tanzania. This locality is known as the Mererani Hills or Mererani Mines.

In nature, tanzanite occurs in the form of hexagonal columns, tablets or pyramids. The size of these crystals ranges from small to medium, reaching up to several centimetres. Oval and rounded shapes, as well as layers, are equally common. Natural tanzanite has very strong reported properties. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 6.5–7.

The history of tanzanite began relatively recently, as this mineral was only discovered in 1967 in northern Tanzania. The discovery was credited to Maasai tribes who lived in the area. Over time it became a highly sought-after gemstone, whose charming colour and rarity attracted the interest of jewellers, collectors and gemstone dealers around the world.

Tanzanite is known for a phenomenon called pleochroism. Its colour changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed. Tanzanite is usually blue, but when viewed from a different angle it can shift towards a purple or reddish hue.

What is tanzanite used for and what can you make from it?

Tanzanite has a beautiful blue to purple colour, so it is no surprise that it is often used in the jewellery-making industry to make necklaces, bracelets and earrings. These are made purely from tanzanite, but also in combination with other stones and precious metals to achieve sophisticated, luxurious pieces.
