Sapphire is associated with wisdom and truth. In many cultures it is considered a stone of knowledge and intellectual growth. It has an intense blue colour, though blue-green, blue-violet, and even pink shades can also predominate. It is precisely its blue colour, however, that is considered its most valuable and sought-after quality. Traditionally it is linked to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, art, justice and warfare. According to astrology it reportedly has a strengthening effect on relationships and supports strong bonds between partners.

People also seek it out for its reported protective properties. It is said to provide spiritual protection and to radiate energy that helps guard against evil looks. In alternative medicine it is used above all for its reported calming and harmonising effects. Sapphire is considered a mineral that reportedly attracts wealth and prosperity. It is believed to bring financial success and abundance. It is also often associated with strengthening intellectual abilities, memory and concentration. It reportedly supports clear communication and the expression of thoughts.

Localities, forms of sapphire and history:

The most significant locality for sapphire is Sri Lanka. Other important localities include Myanmar, Thailand, Madagascar, Australia, Kenya and Tanzania.

In nature, sapphire is found in the form of crystals of various shapes, such as hexagonal columns, tablets, pyramids or grains ranging from a few millimetres to several centimetres. It is also often found in the form of oval and rounded shapes, veins, or gravel and sediment. In any case, natural sapphire reportedly has very strong properties. On the Mohs scale it corresponds to a hardness of 9. It is therefore a genuinely hard stone.

Sapphire was already known in ancient civilisations; the ancient Egyptians, for example, associated it with the heavenly and spiritual world. In Mesopotamia and Persia it was later prized as a protective stone and a symbol of power. In Hinduism and Buddhism it was associated with spiritual knowledge and truth. In the Middle Ages this mineral became popular among European aristocracy and the clergy. It was used to make coronation jewels. Its popularity has only grown over the years.

that there is one truly distinctive variety of sapphire? It is known as padparadscha sapphire, and it is exceptional in that it combines vivid orange and pink in a single stone. Padparadscha comes from Sinhalese, one of the official languages of Sri Lanka, where this mineral is found. It translates as "lotus flower".
