Společnost Royal Talens byla založena v roce 1899 Martinem Talensem v nizozemském městě Apeldoorn. Původně se specializovala na výrobu kancelářských potřeb a inkoustů, ale postupně se rozrostla na světového výrobce špičkových barev a dalších potřeb pro umělce. V roce 1949 byl společnosti udělen královský titul "Royal" nizozemskou královnou Vilemínou Nizozemskou.
Společnost ve spolupráci s muzeem Van Gogh vytvořila kolekci malířských a kreslířských materiálů inspirovaných barevnou paletou Van Goghových děl. Royal Talens také spolupracovala s prestižní evropskou sítí uměleckých institucí Elia, které předala své odborné znalosti ohledně malířských materiálů a technik pro budoucí umělce.
Mezi hlavní umělecké značky, které Royal Talens vyrábí patří Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Amsterdam, Art Creation a Cobra.
