Pietersite occurs at several localities around the world. The main localities are Namibia, South Africa, China and the USA.

In nature, pietersite occurs in the form of fibres or needles that cluster into dense aggregates. These fibres can be very fine and thin, creating interesting patterns in individual pieces of stone. An unusual form is the so-called "storm trees". This is an atypical variety of pietersite whose needles are arranged in intricate, beautiful patterns resembling a storm or tree branches. Natural pietersite reportedly has very strong properties, which are widely used across many fields around the world. On the Mohs scale it corresponds to a hardness of 6.5–7.

The history of pietersite only began to be written in the 20th century. This mineral was first discovered in 1962 in Namibia by a farmer named Sid Pieters, who noticed strange blue-brown stones appearing in a wheat field during the rainy season. The mineral was subsequently named after this farmer and became a subject of interest to mineralogists and geologists. It gradually gained popularity around the world.

There is a rare variant of pietersite associated with meteorites? This variant of the mineral is found only in meteorite craters and is called "meteoric pietersite". Meteoric pietersite is said to form as a result of the intense pressure and heat when a meteorite strikes the Earth's surface. It is very rare and prized by collectors.

What is pietersite used for and what can you make from it?

Pietersite is characterised by very unique patterns, which are used mainly in the jewellery industry, where it gives jewellery an extraordinary flair. This mineral is used to make necklaces and bracelets, where the stone is worn either on its own or combined with other stones or minerals. It is usually also complemented with a gold or silver element. Rings are also made from it, where it tends to be used as the dominant stone, though it is sometimes combined with other minerals. Earrings of both simple and more elaborate designs, as well as beads and pearls, are no exception either.
