Oil painting is a masterful painting technique that uses oil paints. The pigments in them are bound using oil, most often linseed oil, but walnut or poppy seed oil may also be used. Turpentine oil is used for thinning. The type of oil used affects the covering power, drying time, durability of the artwork and the resulting shade of colour. Oil paints take several hours to days to dry. Their advantage is therefore that you can work with them and adjust them easily even after applying to canvas. Once dry, the colours are somewhat darker than they were on the palette.

For oil painting, you'll also find a palette, brushes and painting canvas useful. Before you start painting, it's a good idea to coat untreated canvas with oil size, which evens out irregularities in the canvas, creates an optical base for the painting and an intermediate layer between the paint and the surface.
