Lava is found in many places around the world, primarily, of course, in volcanic regions. The largest producers are the Hawaiian Islands in the USA, followed closely by Iceland, the Galapagos, Santorini in Greece and then Ethiopia.

In nature, lava occurs as molten rock that erupts from volcanoes during volcanic activity. It then cools and gradually solidifies, forming various shapes and structures such as lava domes, flows, caves, tubes and fields. In any case, natural lava is said to have very strong and positive properties. On the Mohs scale, it reaches a hardness of 4 – 6. Its hardness depends on the specific composition and minerals within the particular rock.

Lava played a very significant role in ancient civilisations. In ancient Greece and Rome, for example, it was associated with gods such as Vulcan and Hephaestus, who embodied fire, blacksmithing and volcanic forces. It was used mainly in construction, for building roads and walls. For example, the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands was built almost entirely from lava.
