Localities, forms of labradorite and history:

The largest locality for labradorite is Canada. Other significant localities include Madagascar, Russia, Scandinavia and the USA.

In nature, labradorite occurs in the form of crystals, massive forms or labradorescent stones. The crystals have flat faces and prisms and occur in various sizes. However, it also appears in the form of massive blocks or deposits, where the stone is cut into slabs and then used further. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 6 to 6.5. Natural labradorite reportedly has the strongest properties.

The history of labradorite dates back to the 18th century, when it was first discovered in the Canadian province of Labrador. It gradually became very popular in jewellery-making and the gemstone craft. In the 19th century it became a popular material for making Victorian-style jewellery.
