In nature, kunzite can occur in the form of fragments or crystals with six faces and pyramidal terminations. These crystals can be of various sizes. It is also found in massive forms. In any case, natural kunzite has very strong properties, which is why it is used across many fields all around the world. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 6.5–7.

The history of kunzite goes back to the 20th century, when it was discovered in California by the mineralogist George F. Kunz, after whom the stone is named.

Kunzite was found on the Moon in 1971. This happened during the Apollo 15 mission. Some samples of kunzite are light violet in colour and are considered among the rarest lunar minerals.

What is kunzite used for and what can you make from it?

Kunzite is very popular for its delicate pink to purple colour, particularly in jewellery making. Necklaces and bracelets of a very elegant appearance are made from this mineral. Kunzite is also very popular for making rings, where it is used both as the main stone and as an accent stone complementing other gemstones. Smaller pieces of kunzite are often used to make earrings. These stones are cut into drop shapes, circles or other geometric shapes. Kunzite is also used to make brooches and clasps that nicely decorate dresses, coats or scarves.
