Red coral is found in several places around the world. The main localities are the Mediterranean Sea, Southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia), the Indian Ocean, Australia and Japan.

In nature, red coral occurs mainly in the form of coral reefs and formations on the sea bed. Corals are formed by tiny organisms that create limestone exoskeletons. Once found, they undergo a processing procedure in which the soft tissue is removed, leaving only the hard limestone structure, which is then further processed into other forms and coloured either with a natural dye from shrimp or with artificial dyes that intensify the coral's red colour. Natural red coral has very strong properties that are widely used across many fields around the world. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 3.5, making it a relatively soft mineral.

The history of red coral dates back to antiquity, when it was highly prized for its beauty. It was very popular, for example, in ancient Egypt, where it was considered a symbol of prosperity and strength. Necklaces, bracelets and amulets were made from it. The Romans often associated it with wealth and social status. It was favoured by aristocrats and nobility. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance it was used to decorate crowns and diadems.
