Jadeite is found in many places around the world. The most significant localities, however, are Burma, Guatemala, Canada, Russia and New Zealand.
This stone occurs in nature in several forms, for example as massive blocks or pieces. Other forms include streaks or patches, and nodules (rounded or egg-shaped forms of jadeite) that form in rock are not uncommon either. In any case, natural jadeite reportedly has very strong properties and is used across many fields. On the Mohs scale it corresponds to a hardness of 6.5–7.
Since ancient times, jadeite has played an important role in ancient China, where it was regarded as a symbol of virtue, justice, happiness and longevity. The Egyptians were also very fond of it. They made statuettes, jewellery and tomb objects from it. They associated it with the renewal of life. In Mesopotamia and Rome it was regarded as a stone of wealth, beauty and power.
jadeite was a very important stone in the legendary cultures of Central America? The Maya and Aztecs valued jadeite highly, regarding it as a sacred stone linked to nature and the gods. It held strong spiritual significance for them and was widely used to make statuettes and other religious objects.
Jadeite is very popular in jewellery-making. It is often used to make necklaces of various lengths and styles. Bracelets are usually strung on elastic cord or sturdy wire. Sometimes, however, jadeite is combined with other stones for maximum effect. Earrings are made either in a simple form or in more elaborate designs, such as drop earrings made from several stones. Rings are a very popular choice. They are striking and very elegant, and are often embellished with other stones. Cufflinks and amulets are also not left behind. You can also make statuettes, small pendants, meditation beads, decorations and other ornaments.
