In nature, howlite occurs in massive or granular crystal form. Natural howlite can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small crystals to larger blocks. The properties of natural gemstones are said to be at their strongest. On the Mohs hardness scale it rates 3.5.

Howlite was named after Henry How, a geologist and mineralogist who first described it in 1868. It was discovered in Canada. It has an interesting history of being confused with coral. It was wrongly sold as coral, because its appearance resembles a coral-like structure.
