Howlite was named after Henry How, a geologist and mineralogist who first described it in 1868. It was discovered in Canada. It has an interesting history of being confused with coral. It was wrongly sold as coral, because its appearance resembles a coral-like structure.
Did you know that howlite is linked to the famous American director, actor and producer Orson Welles? It is said to have had a special influence on Welles and became part of his image. He often showed it off in television appearances and interviews. It is said that the ring served as a kind of magical protection, which Welles reportedly relied on heavily in his artistic and theatrical projects.
Howlite is most commonly used to make talismans and amulets.
