Dumortierite is found in many places around the world. However, the most significant localities are France, Brazil, the USA, Namibia, South Africa and Australia.

In nature, dumortierite occurs in the form of smaller crystals with needle-like, prismatic or columnar shapes. Veins or massive formations are also not unusual, and the mineral is then processed into beads and small spheres. The natural mineral is said to have very strong properties. It is used across many fields around the world. On the Mohs scale, it corresponds to a hardness of 7.

The history of this stone began in 1881, when it was first discovered in France, specifically in the Rhône-Alpes region, by the French mineralogist Eugène Dumortier, after whom the mineral was also named. Over the years, it has been found gradually in many places around the world. At first it was only considered a fairly interesting stone from an aesthetic point of view; later, its use in the glass and ceramics industries was explored. Over time it became especially popular in the jewellery industry, where it is still used today.
