Emeralds are found in many localities around the world. The largest deposits are in Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Russia.

In nature, emerald occurs in the form of hexagonal columns, tablets, pyramids, or combinations of these shapes. Veins, inclusions, layers and gravel deposits are equally common. Natural emerald reportedly has very strong properties. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 7.5–8. It is therefore a hard stone.

The history of emerald goes back thousands of years. It was already known to the ancient Egyptians, who considered it a symbol of fertility and the renewal of life. In ancient Greece and Rome it was, moreover, considered a symbol of love and passion. Kings and aristocrats used it to adorn their jewellery and swords in the Middle Ages. They also used it to decorate reliquaries. During the Renaissance it became a popular mineral in art and jewellery-making. It was used above all to embellish portraits.

These are made in various styles — drop, stud or hoop. Pendants, brooches and clasps, as well as various jewellery designs, are also popular.
