Pyrite is associated with abundance and wealth. It is no wonder, then, that it is widely sought after and worn as an amulet that reportedly supports financial success. Its colour is typically golden to brassy. It can have a shade of bright gold, matt gold or a brass tone. Rarely, it also occurs in shades of silver or greenish colour. It is traditionally associated with the Greek goddess of fertility and the harvest, Demeter. According to astrology, it also helps attract various interesting opportunities.

People also seek it out for its reportedly supportive effects. It is said to support self-confidence and self-belief. It is also said to allow one to view oneself more favourably than one often does. It reportedly also has protective effects, said to be able to create an energy shield and thus protect its wearer. In alternative medicine it is used to raise vitality and energy. It is also generally associated with prosperity in all respects.

Pyrite occurs at many localities around the world. Well-known localities include Spain, Peru, the USA, Italy, Russia and China.

In nature, pyrite is found most often in the form of cube-shaped crystals of various sizes. Some consist of more than one crystal form. Equally common are grainy aggregates of various shapes and sizes. Occasionally it can also be found in the form of dispersed microscopic grains that may be part of rocks. In any case, natural pyrite reportedly has very strong properties, which can be used, for example, for making amulets or jewellery. On the Mohs scale, its hardness corresponds to 6–6.5.

The history of pyrite reaches far back into the past. In ancient Greece it was called "pyr", meaning fire, because of its ability to create sparks when struck against metal objects. The Greeks therefore used it to make fire. During the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries it was used as an important source of sulphur for the production of sulphuric acid.

Pyrite is also nicknamed "fool's gold"? This is because of its lustre and appearance, which resembles real gold. This similarity has led to many disappointments and frauds in the past.

What is pyrite used for and what can you make from it?

The dazzling lustre and interesting textures of pyrite are often used in jewellery-making, where it is used to make necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. They are cut and polished into various shapes and sizes. After processing, they are used as the centrepiece stones of a piece of jewellery. They are unique for their brilliance and give the jewellery a natural elegance. It is important to bear in mind that pyrite is a relatively soft mineral that can easily be scratched or chipped. It therefore needs to be handled with care.

Pyrite is also used for decorative purposes, but also for making pyrotechnics, and in the production of sulphur and sulphuric acid.
