Liver of sulfur solution which is used to dye metals, especially silver, black. They’ll gain the look of an ancient metal, they aren’t so bright and shiny then. The degree of darkening can be determined by the length of time in the bath and the subsequent brushing. Mix the red liquid with warm water (two to three drops per 1 dlc) and submerge the jewellery piece. Lightly move it and take it out as soon as you feel that it darkened sufficiently. When in contact with air, liver of sulfur releases hydrogen sulfide and smells like rotten eggs. Rinse the patinated object well in soapy water, that will stop the patinating process. Store the solution in a tightly sealed bottle in the dark. This way, it’ll last for several months. It’s advisable to patinate in gloves, it will protect your hands from staining and unpleasant smell. When you start working with patina, you’ll find out that it changes colour gradually. It goes from antique gold through magenta and purple to dark blue. You can take the object out anytime you want and use the remarkable colours that won’t last forever, but a couple of months without a doubt.
