Localities, forms of obsidian and history:

The best-known locality for obsidian, especially rainbow obsidian, is Mexico. Other significant localities are the USA, Scotland and Turkey.

In nature, obsidian is found in the form of stone blocks containing coloured bands or spots. These blocks can vary in size and shape. In any case, natural rainbow obsidian reportedly has very strong properties. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 5.5.

The history of obsidian goes back thousands of years. It was highly prized in ancient Egypt, where it was used to make jewellery and knives. The Aztecs and Maya used it in ritual ceremonies, but also made weapons, tools and jewellery from it. The Apache and Navajo made arrowheads from this stone.
