Larimar (larimar) is associated with the power of water and the oceans. It is said to bring feelings of renewal and revitalisation. It symbolises nature and its ability to transform and regenerate. It has a characteristic blue colour that ranges from light blue to intense azure or turquoise. It can sometimes have white or light brown streaks and spots. Traditionally, it is linked to Neptune, the god of the sea, the depths of the ocean and earthquakes. According to astrology, it reportedly has a supportive effect on communication, particularly on self-expression.

People also seek it out because it is said to symbolise truthfulness and authenticity. It reportedly has calming and harmonising properties. It is believed to soothe the mind and reduce stress. In alternative medicine, it is reportedly used to calm and dissolve emotional blockages and trauma. This mineral is also often associated with spiritual growth and awareness. It is said to support connection with the higher self and open communication with the spiritual world. It is recommended for use during meditation and deep breathing.

Types of larimar:

We offer two types of larimar, including the one described above. They differ not only in colouring but also in their characteristic properties and different effects. These include:

Green larimar (green larimar / angelite) is associated with calm, peace, spiritual connection and communication, and is said to allow its wearer to express themselves and their needs in a clear and gentle way. It has a turquoise colour, though its shades can range from light blue to deep turquoise with white or grey streaks. It is renowned for its calming and relaxing properties, reportedly helping to reduce stress and tension. It is said to support a state of relaxation. It reportedly helps with forgiveness, understanding and acceptance. It is said to strengthen spiritual development and intuition.

Localities, forms of larimar and history:

Larimar is a relatively rare stone found in only one place in the world – a small area on the coast of the Dominican Republic.

In nature, larimar occurs in the form of crystals of various shapes, including tablets, pyramids or columns of different sizes, ranging from microscopic up to several centimetres. Larimar is also often found in the form of spots and veins in rock. Round and oval shapes, known as nodules, are no exception either. Natural larimar is reportedly very powerful, which is why it is used across many fields around the world. On the Mohs hardness scale, it corresponds to 4.5–5.

The history of larimar is relatively short, as it was discovered relatively recently, in 1916 in the Dominican Republic on the Barahona peninsula. In 1974, it was identified as a distinct mineral. Commercial mining of larimar began in the 1970s, and the mineral gradually gained more and more popularity.

Did you know?

The name larimar is formed by combining two words: the name of the discoverer's daughter from an indigenous tribe in the Dominican Republic, Larissa, and the Spanish word "mar", meaning sea. Larimar therefore translates as "sea Larissa".

What is larimar used for and what can you make from it?

Larimar is a very popular stone in the jewellery industry for its unique blue colour. It is used mainly to make bracelets and necklaces, which look truly striking. Earrings of a very elegant appearance are no exception either, and are often combined with other semi-precious stones and precious metals. Rings with larimar look very lovely, and tend to be artistically decorated, drawing more than one glance to the hands of their wearers.

People also like to make pendants of various shapes from larimar, as well as buttons, or use it to decorate clocks, jewellery boxes, flowerpots, vases and candlesticks. Your imagination is the only limit.
