Beads made from genuine freshwater pearls in a potato shape, 7–8 mm, are a popular component for jewellery with a touch of natural beauty, delicacy and luxury. This irregular shape is commonly known as a potato pearl. Freshwater pearls generally have irregular shapes, and no two are ever quite alike. That is why they are so popular among designers and creators of original handmade jewellery.

Genuine pearls beautifully complement every outfit, from minimalist to more elaborate. From freshwater pearls you can create a beautiful pearl necklace, pearl bracelet or elegant earrings with freshwater pearls, as well as brooches or delicate hair accessories. They combine wonderfully with gold-plated or silver components, but also with minerals or glass beads. This creates elegant, modern jewellery that looks natural yet sophisticated. Freshwater pearls also make a trendy combination with plastic beads with motifs or letters.

Genuine freshwater pearls form naturally inside freshwater mussels, which react to a foreign body — usually a grain of sand — by coating it in layers of nacre. This process can take several years, and it is precisely this that gives pearls their soft lustre and natural structure.

How to recognise genuine freshwater pearls? Genuine freshwater pearls, for example, do not have a perfectly smooth surface and have irregular shapes. When you hold a pearl up against strong light, genuine pearls often let a little light through, revealing the layering of the nacre. Imitations tend to be opaque and lack depth. The price is also a good indicator of authenticity — plastic imitations are considerably cheaper.

How to care for freshwater pearls? Since this is a natural material, freshwater pearls are also sensitive to acids, sweat and cosmetics. They deserve gentle handling and careful storage. Individual pieces of jewellery should be stored separately in soft pouches. If you want to clean the pearls, we recommend using only water, or cosmetics specifically intended for cleaning pearl jewellery.
