Localities, forms of blue calcite and history:

Blue calcite is found at many localities around the world. The most significant deposits are in Mexico, Canada, the USA and South Africa. Other countries where blue calcite localities can be found include Peru, Brazil, Morocco, China, India, England and others.

In nature, blue calcite occurs in the form of crystals of various sizes and shapes, such as hexagonal columns, plates or needles. Geodes, spherical or oval shapes, aggregates and sediments are not uncommon either. Natural blue calcite is said to have very strong properties. It is used across many fields around the world. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 3.

The history of blue calcite goes back to antiquity. The ancient Egyptians already used it to make various pieces of jewellery, figurines and decorative objects. In ancient Greece and Rome it was considered a precious stone. It was associated with wealth and prestige. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder described it in his work "Historia Naturalis" and mentioned that blue calcite was imported from North Africa. During the Middle Ages it was then used as a material in painting, serving to create blue pigment in paintings.

What is blue calcite used for and what can you make from it?

Blue calcite is a very popular mineral in jewellery-making, not only for its beautiful blue colour and fluorescent properties, but also for its transparency. It is worked into various shapes, which are then used, for example, as centre stones for rings. It is also worked into bead shapes, which are then used to make bracelets and necklaces, and often earrings too. Blue calcite is also used for so-called encrustation. In this case the stone is taken and set into other materials, such as silver or gold, to create an attractive and unique piece of jewellery. Blue calcite can thus be set, for example, into a silver locket or a gold ring.

People also very much enjoy making lamps, candlesticks, figurines and statuettes from this stone. Lava lamps and wall claddings, which give a home an elegant and original look, are no exception either.
