Phosphosiderite is a fairly rare mineral found in limited quantities in only a few locations around the world. The main localities include sites in Brazil, China, Russia, Peru and the USA.

In nature, phosphosiderite occurs mainly in the form of crystals of various shapes, whether columnar, tabular, needle-like or prismatic. These crystals can be small to medium-sized and usually have flat or angular shapes. They are also commonly found in the form of small grains and aggregates or natural fragments. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to 3.5–4.5.

The history of phosphosiderite only began in the 19th century, when it was named by the Swedish chemist and mineralogist Jöns Jacob Berzelius after its chemical composition. Over time it became a favourite among collectors and jewellers around the world.
