Localities, forms of chrysocolla and history:

The most important locality for chrysocolla, as the name of Peruvian chrysocolla itself suggests, is Peru. Other, less abundant deposits are found in Chile, Australia, Namibia and the United States.

The most common form of chrysocolla found in nature is layers or bands of varying thickness. However, very fine needle-shaped crystals are not uncommon either, which are often part of larger geodes, or rounded, closed shapes called nodules of various sizes. In any case, this natural mineral has very strong reported properties and is used across many fields. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to a hardness of 2.5–4.

Chrysocolla, especially Peruvian chrysocolla, was a very popular stone in ancient Egypt, where figurines and other decorative objects were made from it. It was also popular in Greece and Rome, where it was used for the same purposes. Pre-Columbian civilisations in South America, among which we can name the Incas, considered Peruvian chrysocolla a sacred stone and associated it with deities. It was thus used for various rituals.

The Egyptian queen Cleopatra was also fond of this gemstone? She reportedly believed that Peruvian chrysocolla protected her and would bring love and positive energy into her life. As she was known for always wanting to highlight her beauty with striking jewellery, she wore it in the form of necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets, but also, for its reported protective properties, as an amulet, and it is quite possible that she also had figurines or other objects made from it.

What is chrysocolla used for and what can you make from it?

In jewellery-making, chrysocolla is a very popular stone for its beautiful blue-green colour. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and other jewellery are made from it. It tends to be cut into a variety of shapes and then set into settings, but jewellery made from the raw stone is not uncommon either. It is often combined with other minerals, such as lapis lazuli, malachite or turquoise. Together with Peruvian chrysocolla, these stones create an interesting colour combination and an unconventional design. Because of its reported protective and supportive properties, it is often used to make amulets and talismans.

Chrysocolla is also excellent for making jewellery boxes, frames or other decorative items for the home. Equally popular are meditation objects, such as rollers or small pillows.
