Black tourmaline occurs in many places around the world, but the largest deposits are found in Brazil, the USA, Afghanistan, Mozambique, Madagascar and Russia.

In nature, black tourmaline occurs in the form of long, hexagonal, prism-shaped columnar crystals. These crystals usually have a smooth surface. Their size varies. They can be small, or up to several metres long, rod-like, prismatic or needle-shaped. It is occasionally found in the form of aggregates, that is, interconnected and clustered with other crystals. In any case, natural black tourmaline has very strong reported properties, which are used across a wide range of fields. On the Mohs hardness scale it corresponds to a value of 7.

Black tourmaline was first named in the 18th century by the Swedish chemist and mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt. However, it was already known in ancient cultures. The Greeks and Romans made amulets from it for its protective properties. They believed it would ward off evil forces. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was mined mainly in Germany, where it was highly prized for its beauty and quality. Beautiful jewellery is still made from it around the world today.
