In nature, tourmaline occurs in the form of prismatic crystals with edges and a hexagonal cross-section, as grains, as shells known as tourmaline cavities, or as aggregates where several crystals join together. The history of tourmaline goes back to ancient times, when it was a very popular stone for making jewellery. Several years later it reached China, where it was prized also for its protective and healing properties. It got its name from the Portuguese, who brought it over from Brazil in the 16th century. Tourmaline is thus a Portuguese name, which translates as "coloured stone". Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became very popular throughout Europe.

Tourmaline is used in the manufacture of heat detectors and pyroelectric sensors. It is one of the few minerals that exhibit the pyroelectric effect, meaning it becomes electrically charged when its temperature changes. When tourmaline is heated or cooled, it generates a small electric charge and magnetic field.
