Symbolism and healing properties of hematite:

Hematite is associated with strength and determination. It is used as a symbol of support in overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. It has a reddish-brown to grey colour, though its shades can vary, from light grey to dark red with a metallic sheen. It is traditionally linked to the Sumerian goddess of war, fertility, love and passion and protector of women, Inanna. This gemstone symbolises the earth and the stability associated with it. It reportedly brings a feeling of calm and wellbeing. According to astrology it also supports health and vitality.

People also seek it out for its protective properties. It is therefore often used as an amulet. Hematite is also used for its reported effect against fatigue. In alternative medicine it is used to calm the mind and emotions. It reportedly helps to harmonise the mind and emotional states. Hematite is also often used to balance a person's energy field.

Localities, forms of hematite and history:

Hematite is found mainly in Brazil, Australia and Russia. Then in China, South Africa and the USA.

Synthetic hematite is produced in laboratories artificially, either by the sol-gel method or the hydrothermal method. In the first case, a chemical reaction between an iron salt and a gel is used. The process involves forming a gel, which is then dried and calcined to obtain synthetic hematite. The hydrothermal method involves exposing a reaction mixture of iron, water and other chemicals to higher temperatures and pressures. Synthetic hematite has properties similar to natural hematite, including colour, lustre and hardness, which on the Mohs scale corresponds to 5.5–6.5.

The history of hematite dates back to ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, where it was used to make amulets, seals and ornaments, and also served for its reported protective properties as an amulet or talisman. This use continued across the centuries. In modern times it is also used to make watches, pipes and seals.

You can verify the authenticity of hematite with a simple test: take a piece or tip of hematite and run it across a porcelain or white ceramic surface. If it leaves a red streak, it is genuine.

What is hematite used for and what can you make from it?

Its dark colour and lustre give hematite a special charm, which is particularly valued in jewellery-making, where it is used to make hematite beads for necklaces and bracelets. It can be combined with other stones, wood or metal to create interesting designs. For elegant earrings it is usually combined with gold and silver. Cufflinks and rings are also made from it. Amulets, keyring pendants, magnetic stones, daggers and knives are also very popular.
